Peter Shin
Peter S. Shin (b. 1991) is a composer whose music thrives on reacting to matters of national identity, social belonging, and other contemporary issues through his Korean-American lens.
Recent highlights include a 2017/18 Fulbright Research Grant to South Korea in order to compose an orchestral work at Seoul National University, the 2017-’19 Berkeley Symphony/Music Alive Composer Fellowship, a 2017 Aspen Music Festival composition fellowship, selection in the 2017 Minnesota Orchestra Composer Institute, as well as the 2017 New Jersey Symphony Orchestra Ed- ward T. Cone Composition Institute, winner in the 2017 SCI/ASCAP Student Composition Commission in the graduate division, a 2017 Cohan Collective residency led by Robert Cohan of the Martha Graham Dance Company, and the 2017 USC Jimmy McHugh Endowed Composition Prize. Other highlights include performances with the University of Southern California Thornton Symphony Orchestra, a saxophone quartet concerto with the University of Michigan Symphony Orchestra, Juilliard, TEDx, the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company, and an Honorable Mention in the 2016 ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composer Awards.
With his interest in arts administration and education, Peter participated in the 2016 League of American Orchestras “Essentials of Orchestra Management” Seminar, where he was introduced to Youth Orchestra LA at Heart of Los Angeles (YOLA at HOLA), an El Sistema program dedicated to the musical training of underserved youth. Here, Peter helped develop the rst composition class which culminated in world premieres of his students’ works. He also enjoys an ongoing mentorship with Ruth Eliel—former Executive Direc- tor of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra and the Colburn Foundation—through the USC Thornton Board of Councilors Mentorship Program.
As a photographer and graphic designer, he enjoys providing fellow artists with posters, headshots, and other materials to help actualize their artistic vision. He served as the Marketing and Graphic Design Intern for UMS (University Musical Society), having cre- ated over 100 ads promoting performing arts events in their 2013-2014 season, served as the Assistant Graphic Designer for the USC Thornton School of Music in the 2015-16 season, and photographer for the USC Viterbi School of Engineering. Other clients include the University of Michigan, Yale School of Music, composers Michael Daugherty and Bright Sheng, with work featured on the Naxos label, Hal Leonard Corporation, and Boosey & Hawkes.
Born and raised in Kansas City, Missouri, Peter received his master’s in composition from the University of Southern California as a James Newton Howard Scholar studying with Ted Hearne, Sean Friar, and Frank Ticheli, and his bachelor’s in composition from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor studying with Bright Sheng, Michael Daugherty, Evan Chambers, and Erik Santos.
